Jabal Nur is a historic mountain located northeast of the city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Standing at approximately 640 meters above sea level, it is renowned in Islamic history as the site where the first revelation was sent down to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The name "Jabal Nur" means "Mountain of Light," symbolizing the divine light of knowledge and guidance that began to shine from this place.
At the peak of Jabal Nur lies the Cave of Hira, a small cave that witnessed one of the most significant moments in Islam. It was here that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) often secluded himself for reflection and worship before receiving the first revelation from the Angel Jibril (Gabriel). The initial verses revealed were from Surah Al-‘Alaq (Chapter 96), verses 1–5, marking the beginning of his prophethood and the Islamic message.
This mountain has become a popular spiritual destination for Muslims around the world, especially during Hajj and Umrah seasons. Despite its steep and physically demanding climb, many pilgrims ascend to see the Cave of Hira and experience the sacred atmosphere where the Quranic revelation began. Stone steps have been added to aid climbers, though caution and physical preparation are still necessary.
Jabal Nur is not merely a geographical site but a symbol of the dawn of Islamic civilization. It reminds Muslims of the value of knowledge, patience, and sincerity in seeking truth. The Prophet’s contemplation in the cave inspires believers to reflect on history and deepen their faith in Allah SWT.
